Being True

April 9, 2011 5 Comments

We meet at the street corner in the black of morning and hit the pavement. Women, runners, friends.
We talk about our children, our menstrual cycles, world and civic happenings, strained family relationships, the ups and downs of marriage, the anguish of a miscarriage. There are no facades. We huff and puff so much it’s hard to make anything sound shiny or less than true. We speak candidly because that’s all we have energy for. And it feels good.
I’m not this way all the time. I want to be, but sometimes I’m too careful. Sometimes I’m afraid to sound contrary or disagreeable. Sometimes I catch myself thinking I know more or I’m in a better place than so and so. Other times I don’t want to lose face, appear ultra-flawed (which I most certainly am), or talk about my own failures.
But last summer, I read Anne Lammott’s book, Bird by Bird (a must-read for writers) and it changed the way I see things… [Read more @ Segullah].

So happy to have you along.

Hill – what else have you read by Anne? Bird by Bird was my first intro to her.

And Jennie – your honesty. That is precisely what I love about you.
