Joyous Christmas

December 25, 2012 7 Comments

Snow-covered garden illuminated by warm string lights at dusk.

In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;

Snowy night scene with warmly lit house and trees.

Snow had fallen, snow on snow,

Glowing paper lanterns line a snowy path at night.

Snow on snow,

Cozy house glowing with warm lights on a snowy winter night.

In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.

A card celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ with elegant calligraphy.

Our God, Heav’n cannot hold him,
Nor earth sustain;
Heav’n and earth shall flee away
When he comes to reign:

A group of people gathered inside a building with a focus on a central figure holding a child.

In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty
Jesus Christ.

An ornate decorative text beginning with a large letter B on a brown page.

Enough for him, whom cherubim
Worship night and day
A breastful of milk
And a manger full of hay;

A serene painting of a mother tenderly holding her baby.

Enough for him, whom angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
Which adore.

Five women in white dresses holding candles, standing in a row with serene expressions.

What can I give him,
Poor as I am?

A religious painting of a woman holding a child, symbolizing maternal care.

If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part –

A lit candle surrounded by brown textured material.

Yet what can I give him,
Give my heart.

Close-up of elegant script on a document titled 'The Prince of Ve'.

Four children in festive pajamas sitting by a decorated Christmas tree.

Wishing you a joyous Christmas day.

Photos taken on Christmas Eve. New snow, dinner with family at my mother’s home, excited children in christmas pajamas, luminaries throughout the neighborhood.

Poor as I am
December 27, 2012

Cath

Five children in four years, including two sets of twins, brought new meaning to Mary Oliver's earnest question. Our little people aren't so little anymore, but life is still wild, still precious. And this is my meager attempt to hold on, make it last. I love Doug, running, hiking in the mountains, oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, the edge of an ocean, and connecting with you here. So happy to have you along.

    I love the photos and the illustrations! If you haven't already, you MUST google Sissel singing In the Bleak Midwinter, one of my favorites. She came several years ago to perform it with the MoTab choir and it's AMAZING!

    knit 1, knit 1 – and to you!

    Kerri – you too? Harold Darke's melody and Rosetti's words have been on my lips and mind all week. Such a gorgeous song. Merry Christmas Kerri. xo

    Meagen – A happy Christmas to you and your sweet family!

    Gretchen – Oh, you are so right. Sissel's version might be my favorite. (Her voice!) That whole CD is spectacular. I didn't hear it live, but have loved the CD for a few years now. Glad you pointed it out here. Hope you and your darling family had a wonderful Christmas!

    Love the luminaria, Cath. This year I had hoped to light some and it didn't happen. I'll enjoy your photos instead.
